    Interesting item. I could not find anything comparable when searching. Someone will recognize the container.

    I would say you are on the right line, T-4, suggesting it was from an artillery piece.

    The loop to the front of the canister would be for a leather equipment strap to pass through, securing it to the gun shield or trail.

    The blue-grey paint colour and use of brass may, possibly, point toward a naval gun.

    Perhaps a component that went into a breech to protect the internals?? Just a guess.. brass being softer than steel would protect better??

    I've seen several of these and the "explanation" is that these were associated with Artillery cannons and contained grease. Note really proven but not disproven yet either
