Hi Rob, isn't that the short kyu gunto sword that the fighter pilots used to have in specially designed pockets within the aircraft fuselage? it's a cracking blade mate and what a beautiful collection, loads of them here in China but alas they are all fakes. regards. Kevin

Not all shorter blades were carried exclusively by aircrew. They were also carried by tank crew and even ground force officers. I once purchased a late Muromachi period wakizashi made by Echizen Kanetane that was in military mounts from a veteran. He had been a prisoner of war and told me it had been carried by a very sadistic officer at the camp where he was held in Japan.

Hello Bob, I didn't think about the tank crews that carried them also, the only short blades that I have ever seen have always been stated as 'pilots swords' but I bow to your superior knowledge my friend. regards. Kevin
