    Hi Matt-
This sword is an Imperial Japanese Army officer's machine made blade circa 1943 in the standard shingunto mounting. By 1944, a new mounting was introduced that eliminated all of the brass fittings. This was done due to war shortages. The painted characters on the sword nakago are factory assembly numbers.

It is a standard carbon steel blade. If stainless steel, there would not be rust and corrosion on the nakago. The stainless blades were a war time product specifically for naval swords.

It is a poor quality same or ray skin as top quality same(pronounced samay)has large nodules.

I always thought it was hand forged Blade because of slight imperfections and it having a Hamon?

Hamon can be found on blades that are oil tempered and not water tempered like a traditional laminated blade. During the period this was made, any traditional hand forged blade required a signature.

If I can further add to Bob's comment, BUT that does not mean that all signed swords of this period are traditional hand forged.
