    Default 1918 Rich.A.Herder S84/98 bayonet

A century old S84/98 by Richard A. Herder. Imperial Prussian proof marks on pommel and dated on spine "W" 18. Without crosshead screws, so probably early 1918 and so late WW1 production. The blade is blued and that would suggest post WW1 service with the possibly the Reichswehr or Police. The blade has been sharpened, scabbard not matching, original oak wood grips and frog is a Luftwaffe "LBA" marked one "Heinrich Sohn, NEL- ULM 1938". Quite possibly served in two wars.

Amazing and intriguing how the use of the wood grips made it all the way near to the end of the war with the standard K98 bayos.

I had an agv marked bayo with wood grips.
Nice to see yours still having the frog attached after all these years.

No serial numbers Andy. Scabbard is a 1940's replacement. There are little "tack" marks on the flashguard, that suggest someone used it to hammer in tacks on a notice board. This is seen also on Police sidearms, they seemed to routinely use their side arms as hammers. And with the bluing of S84/98 in the post war Weimar period some when into Police service.
