Bayonet Mark S178K
I have a German 98 bayonet that on one side of the blade it is marked S178K other side 6041 with a b under it, could anyone tell me any info as to maker. Above the latch it also has a "Prussian" style eagle over 73. Unfortunately the scabbard does not match, it is unmarked. Thanks in advance.

Re: Bayonet Mark S178K
Hi, Eagle !
S178K is the maker code of 'Gebruder Heller' ( Heller Brothers )
'K' is for 1934.........The other numbers are serial #s. The 'b' means it was
the second group, with repeated numbering.
It should have wood grip panels, most all originally did from this time frame.
Early and pre-war (1938/9) bayonets have makers names on them and
bakelite grips. Late war, they reverted back to codes but this time made up
of lower-case letters. Some manufacturers went back to wood grips
because of depleted supplies!
Regards, Steve.

Re: Bayonet Mark S178K
Thanks Steve, appreciate the information. Yes it does have the smooth wood grips with the small notch in them. I figured the 6041 was a serial no. and had an idea the S178K was a makers code but my book did not have it listed.
Thanks Again,
Brad
