    G'day,

Very new to the study of German militaria, though I have had this K98 for a while now, never really had a good look at it. It's in great shape, the blade is almost pristine (under all that muck!).I have noticed so many different markings and serial numbers, this rings a bit strange to me.

The numbers seem to suggest an odd couple, however in saying that, it also appears to have a matching number: 7348 on the guard and (strangely?) on the frog guard. There is existing numbers elsewhere that mean very little to me.

Could a kindly member please assist me in learning a little about this particular bayonet's history?

    Much appreciated

    Regards,
    Chris

The matching serial numbers on the cross guard and frog stud are not German - they are indicative of post war refurbishment and re-use - Yugoslavia perhaps.

This is a site with lots of information on Germans S84-98 bayonets.

Many thanks for pointing that out; I should have thought of that. There would certainly have been a huge surplus of K98 rifles after the war!

Also a great link, cheers for that.

Agree serial numbers in those areas are common on post reworks by another country still a good original vintage s84/98 used in German service during the war. Bayonet cvl=W.K.C. Stahl u. Eisenwarenfabrik scabbard cof Carl Eickhorn all in all nice bayonet. timothy

Many thanks Timothy. I never realised how solid these were until it was in hand; an extremely well made bayonet.

Thanks again gentlemen; I really appreciate the assistance with this. There is very little doubt that this was a reissue. Even more accurately, I feel Richie is on the money in suggesting a Yugoslavian reissue - I have attached a comparison with a Yugoslavian made M1948 bayonet; the lettering is comparable and note the common Yugoslavian habit of stamping the serial number into the frog stud.

Hi Vedran, thanks for your reply. I must have been typing the above post as you listed yours. I was quite sure it was Yugoslav reissue so again many thanks for the confirmation on the model.
