"Bakelit - polyoxybenzylmethylenglycolanhydride, is an early plastic. It is a thermosetting phenol formaldehyde resin, formed from an elimination reaction of phenol with formaldehyde. It was developed by Belgian-born chemist Leo Baekeland in New York in 1907." this is a wikipedia designation, plastic is a more generic name as bakelit. It was large discussion on BCN 10 years ago about exact material used on grips, some were bring to laboratory and analysed.
