could be the run number. Often times a sn is followed by a U, or W, or such.

S/172 = manufacturers code for Carl Eickhorn.
This code (and others) were used during the period of German re-armament following Hitler coming to power.
The use of the codes rather than the actual makers name was in an atttempt to disguise the amount of re-armament which was going on.
