My first bayonet

Hi guys , after getting my first relic helmet i decided to find a bayonet i think (hope) it is a k98 , i am told it is from a battle in Kurland paid £40 inc shipping what do you think, how do you preserve or clean them.

That is indeed a K98 bayonet and is in remarkably good condition for a battlefield relic, if indeed it does come from Kurland (Im a little doubtful as the wooden grips are still in good condition and there is no really heavy corrosion). You could wash it with a brush in some warm water to get any grease or soil off it but I dont think it needs much else. Its a good original item.

NOT a wire brush! I would leave as is, but if you do a light brushing I would probably suggest a soft toothbrush. And the blade shows signs of sharpening. Closer photos would help, in better light.

Spray some WD 40 on to the blade and then lightly scrub with an old toothbrush, that should bring off some of the surface rust, dont get it on the wooden grips though!...

Do the serial numbers match on the blade and scabbard?

Thanks for the quick replies guys, it is in transit at the moment once its here i can put more pictures up, does the S178 refer to the maker, also the grips are wood, i just happen to know a super french polisher who is a close friend, are they worth cleaning up

When someone mentions the word "polish" collectors have heart attacks. Humongous difference between a light brushing to remove surface dirt and grime and taking it to a shine. I would strongly advise against that.
