Re: Parade Bayonet Screws not rivets?
The black "tar" like stuff is coming from the frog, these frogs were blacked with this stuff, much cheaper than leather. Due to temperature its applied to the handle. I always cleaned them with white spirit, of a kind of solvent, be carefull not the solve the complete handle.

Re: Parade Bayonet Screws not rivets?
Jack, I’m not surprised. One time a friend of mine (a specialist collector), and myself went through a large batch of dress bayonets that had slots and functional catches. As I recall, it was only with a relatively few WW I vintage pieces that they actually fit and locked onto the bayonet lug.
PS: There are no guarantees, but for myself I probably would first try something relatively soft like a toothpick, cut down ice cream stick, etc. with a small drop of light machine oil. Best Regards, FP

FP,
I will be cautious! I have already had a bit of a blow out with a helmet decal, I am not keen to repeat it.
