Default Early Camps - 1933 - Rare Glimpse

These staged photographs were published in the book "1933 - DAS JAHR DES DEUTSCHEN" (Streicher).

They feature scenes such as potato peeling, roll call and guard detail etc at Dachau and Oranienburg. Note the seemingly relaxed inmates relaxing in the dayroom...with the guards present...but barely paying attention. The careful staging of such images was important at a time when the Nazis were still concerned about opinion elsewhere. It was not long before such concerns were a thing of the past...and the dark entity that was the KZ system closed to such consideration, enveloping all within its hellish existence.

Interesting photo's again Carl. Is there any mention in the book as to what they are doing in the photo at Dachau? Looks like a lake or reservoir , most of the people appear to be wearing swimming trunks, but instead of swimming they're watering the garden? How blummin' odd!

The caption says "Self-built swimming pool in the Dachau concentration camp".

Another great example of the "propaganda" of the Reich, right up there with the Theresienstadt Red Cross "inspection"! Leon.

Yes, they're watering, maybe something was just planted or just keeping the grass green. It's more like a spa, right?

Creepy pics... Pic #2; Looks like early solar panel technology?

Beyond the border of the Häftlingslager (Prisoner's Camp), there was a large triangular shaped swimming pool established within the grounds of the SS zone. Although the caption states that the pool was in the concentration camp, patently, it was not established for the enjoyment and relaxation of the inmates. The pool was however, sometimes used by prisoner functionaries such as a Blockältester (Block Elder) or Stubenältester (Room Elder) but never by regular prisoners.

Within the camp system, it was usual for the SS to establish various places of relaxation such as swimming pools, cinemas, sports areas and even zoos of varying format, such as the one at Buchenwald which had a variety of animals which even included some exotic species. Those on next week's tour (http://www.warrelics.eu/forum/konzen...1/#post1426649) will hear more about it when we visit the site at Buchenwald.
