Approximately 15 minutes walk from the location of Konzentrationslager Herzogensbusch, a major concentration camp established at the town of Vught near 's-Hertogenbosch, is the memorial for those who were killed at the execution site in the nearby woods.

Some 329 men, resistance members from various prisons, were brought to the site and shot by members of the Dutch SS who usually manned the guard towers at the nearby concentration camp.

The memorial cross was set in 1947, with further commemorative markers following later. Sadly, in 1995 and 1997, the site was the target of vandals. They defaced the memorial stones in a manner that led to them having to be replaced due to permanent damage - see the image below taken at the National Museum located on the former camp grounds. Other images show the modern memorial site and the surroundings.

Interesting, thanks for posting Carl. Very sad to read it was the target of vandals in the 90's.

I'm glad the memorial was replaced although it would have been much better if the original had been respected and left well alone by these idiots. William ,a guy I knew at school was a mindless little p**** who "plotted" to cause damage to some Jewish headstones, fortunately he was so thick that the authorities found out about it and picked him up on the way and gave him 8 months for his trouble!!(bloody good job too!) Leon.

Stupid mindless people...they "hate" and they have absolutely No clue as to Why they are "hating" anything....That would be like Me "hating" the Visigoths because the Romans had problems with them...I think these fools actually think that by espousing some hated cause and making trouble, that it will make them something they are not and never will be-respectable. All they can do is continuously parrot back obsolete gibberish from times they never knew-they have No original thoughts of their own...All just "big frogs in small ponds"....

Recently, the 75th anniversary of the liberation of this, the only major Konzentrationslager on occupied Dutch soil, took place. As the Allied forces advanced, the camp authorities made plans to evacuate the site and transported several thousand male prisoners to Sachsenhausen, whilst hundreds of female inmates were sent to f.KL-Ravensbrück (Frauen-Konzentrationslager Ravensbrück / Women's Concentration Camp Ravensbrück). Once the vast majority of prisoners had left the site, the remaining inmates were either released or sent North to Amersfoort, the police Durchgangslager (Transit Camp) near Utrecht. The facility was then under the administration of the Wehrmacht, who used the site to hold POWs for a short time until the camp was handed over to the Red Cross in late October 1944.
