These images were taken at a recent exhibition in Prague addressing forced labour during the National Socialist era. The photographs show concentration camp inmates at KZ-Mittelbau-Dora working on the manufacturing process of V2/A4 rockets and the expansion of one of the tunnel projects located within the mountains.

From time to time, the question is asked "is the correct name Mittelbau...Dora...Nordhausen...or Mittelbau-Dora...?"

To clarify, "DORA" was the name of the camp when it was established as a satellite of KZ-Buchenwald - during the period late August 1943 to late October 1944

From 28th October 1944 onward, the camp became an independant Konzentrationslager, no longer directly under the administration of KZ-Buchenwald. Thus, from this time, the camp (with its own system of approximately forty sub-camps) was to be known as KZ-Mittelbau. In March 1944, the Junkers Company coined the term Mittelbau and initially denoted the relocation of aircraft manufacturing facilities to these parts in the centre of Germany, hence "Mitte"

The underground tunnel facilities were referred to as the Mittelwerk - after the Reich owned limited liability company founded to manage the facility located within Mt.Kohnstein

Concentration camp Mittelbau / Mittelbau-Dora, should not be referred to as Concentration Camp Nordhausen, despite its proximity to the Thuringian city located in the southern Harz Mountain range.

This view, taken on our recent KZ tour, shows the Aschegrab (Ash Grave) located behind the Krematorium building. Initially, during the period when the camp was a satellite of Buchenwald and named DORA, the bodies of the dead were transported back to the Stammlager (Main Camp). Later, during 1944, the camp had its own crematorium established, behind which the ashes were dumped. The mass grave was landscaped in 2013.

Today, April 11th 2016, marks the 71st anniversary of the liberation of Mittelbau-Dora.

Below, a link addressing the "make it visible" project - a long term work that has focussed on the identification and marking of former barracks located at the site. This morning, as part of the events to mark the anniversary, an inauguration presentation, led by Dr. Stefan Hördler and Torsten Heß, was held.
