One of the most torturous of sites at the Natzweiler-Struthof camp in France was "The Ravine of Death". It earned the appellation due to the brutal methods employed by camp staff during the construction of a road overlooking the camp. Rocks and earth were dug and transported by wheelbarrow, under the guard of the vicious prisoner functionaries who used shovels and pickaxe handles to beat the prisoners. Often, the inmates passed out due to the treatment or were sent sprawling into the electric fencing below. Any Häftling caught in the zone between the construction area and the fencing was invariably cut down by machine gun fire from one of the nearby watchtowers - with "attempted escape" registered in the official records. The attachments show an image from the Natzweiler-Struthof Museum of an artist's impression made from survivor testimonies and a contemporary view taken during a study visit.

Thank you Dom. This is a useful tool for anybody planning a visit to the Natzweiler-Struthof site, I used this prior to my study.

    Regards,

That sure is one brutal KZ to have had the misfortune to have been sent to.I cannot even begin to imagine the level of suffering that the victims endured here.A truly terrible place. Leon.

Indeed it was Leon, without doubt. Natzweiler-Struthof, like other Konzentrationslagers directly attached to a stone quarry was in a separate category known as "Knochenmühlen" (trans. "bone mills") due to the horrific conditions endured by the prisoners.

An important date in the history of Natzweiler-Struthof…

75 years ago today, the largest concentration camp in occupied France, KZ-Natzweiler-Struthof, ceased to operate. The liberators arrived to end the misery at the site in Alsace but sadly too late for the tens of thousands who died within the Natzweiler-Struthof camp system. Take time to think of them today...and remember what happened...for if we forget...we fail them and ourselves.

Today, the memorial site was closed to visitors in order to hold commemorative events at the former camp.
