Various views of some of Gedenkstätte-Flossenbürg's memorials.

Namely, the former mass execution site, shown here with the "pyramid of ashes" in the background, then a view across the memorial park area, towards the "Jesus in the Dungeon" chapel, which was constructed using stone from some of the original guard towers, of which some three still remain. To the left of the chapel, one of the original watchtowers can be seen. The Jewish memorial is visible further left still. The second image, showing the memorial park area, was constructed on the site of the former isolation blocks.

Additional views show the commemorative stone that stands on the site of former prisoner Block 18, and the view from aside the Krematoria building, looking along the "Valley of Death" toward the chapel.

The next image shows the view taken from near the chapel, looking down over the "Valley of Death". The "Square of Nations", commemorating the eighteen different nationalities that suffered at the locale, is directly below in the foreground, with the "Pyramid of Ashes" and "Red Triangle" execution site memorial located just behind. The Krematoria building stands in the background just before the forest, a stark reminder to all who visit.

On the rear wall of the prison block yard, a commemorative plaque marks the location where seven of the anti-Hitler coalition were hanged in April 1945, among them, as noted on the memorial, Wilhelm Canaris.

Carl, why are there so few visitors at this historic site?

If you refer to the lack of people in the images above, that is due to the season, winter, and time of our study visit, which was late afternoon. Very few visitors are present at this time of day, which makes study and reflection much easier.

Generally speaking, historians regarded the Flossenbürg site as "The Forgotten Camp", as for many years, despite it being the fourth-largest Konzentrationslager within Germany, it received very few visitors. Only during the late 1990's did any significant changes occur, due in most part to the eventual clearing away of old factory buildings that were erected on the site. It must be said, that nowadays, the Gedenkstätte-Flossenbürg site, which is maintained by the State of Bavaria, is wonderfully kept.

    Regards,

    Carl

Another memorial at Gedenkstätte-Flossenbürg, this time showing the Jewish memorial building, which today stands on the site formerly occupied by the camp tool shop. One of the three remaining original watchtowers can be seen in the background.

If one looks closely at the image below, showing the "Valley of Death", "Square of Nations", "Pyramid of Ashes" and "Red Triangle" execution area memorials, the original camp gateposts are just visible. The posts were removed from the former entrance area many years ago, and relocated just beyond the ramp that can be seen below the watchtower.

The original gateposts are visible again in this image, which also shows the Jewish commemorative stone that stands aside the ramp that led to the Krematoria. The stone is located on the spot where thousands of pairs of shoes were left behind.

Gateposts visible toward bottom left, Jewish commemorative stone bottom centre.
