The photo of the kantine sums up the differences of living conditions between the prisoners and the staff, the guards eating in what could be a modern bistro and the prisoners in conditions unfit for animals.

Further image that shows the remains of Block 19, the Sonderkommando block at KL-Gross-Rosen. Within KLs, prisoners formed as Sonderkommando (special work unit), would be responsible for arguably the most difficult tasks imaginable, that of disposing of the dead, in the Krematoria facilities. Of the several thousand former Sonderkommando members, it is estimated as few as twenty actually survived the war, mainly due to the SS policy concerning members of these units, who were always killed after a period of work that usually lasted for a few months. During their existence, their living conditions would generally be slightly better than that of other prisoners in the camp, as they were often allowed to keep items from the victims of the gas chambers, which could be used as trade barter for food, cigarettes and alcohol etc, and had the benefit of better quarters.

Located within the main museum building, this model shows how the camp would have appeared during its period of operation.

Although not reproduced within the model shown above, barrack buildings known as Wetterstelle, were also present during the operational period of KL-Gross-Rosen. They were located beyond the upper left hand border as we look at the image of the model. These buildings were used to hold the prisoners who were part of the secret Kommando, whose task was to examine parts of the downed American aircraft that were brought to the camp. Prisoners from this particular Kommando lived in separate barracks, located beyond the main camp's perimeter fencing, yet their own barracks were also surrounded by barbed wire fences.
