Next are several guard towers at Auschwitz-II, Birkenau.

The first visit was in the middle of winter, with temperatures down to -25c.

The final image shows the harshness of the conditions that were present. Winters throughout the period when the KL was active, were generally worse.

Indeed. Somehow, I have always found the sight of the watchtowers to be be more powerful and symbolic imagery than views of any other aspect of the camps.

Similar guard towers can be found in NKVD gulag camps across former USSR although they are less well known.

Is KL Buchenwald still open to the public/available?

I have read several books about the camp and would like to go and see it. But don´t know if I can - the photos in this thread are haunting.
