A young boy who grew up to be a man was liberated from this camp on this day. An overwhelming feeling of obligation to repay the debt his liberators gave him was to eventually come to America and show his gratitude by serving in the US Army. Corporal Theodore "Teddy" Rubin was a member of the 8th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division when he was captured during the Korean War. The Hungarian born Jew was offered freedom from his captors and repatriation to communist Hungary, Rubin refused and remained in captivity with his American GI buddies. Rubin risked his life during captivity foraging for food and keeping others alive with his attitude and spirit.

Sadly Rubin faced the same hatred and anti-Semitism in the American Army as he did with the Nazis. His squad leader hated him for being a Jew and sent him on suicide missions in hopes to be rid of him. Each time Rubin went out, He returned...until the hilltop he was guarding ALONE was overrun..

It was later revealed that Rubin was recommended for the Medal of Honor 4 times, but each time the paperwork was lost. It was not until 55 years later that President Bush awarded the Medal of Honor to Teddy Rubin..

Rubin faced imprisonment twice, once under the Nazi regime and then again under Communist North Korea, and sadly was persecuted during his time in the US Army..

His story and testament about overcoming overwhelming odds and circumstances was captured in the book "Singled Handed".

Teddy Passed away in 2015, but at the end of his interview he said "I have Shalom, Peace"....

I salute you Corporal Teddy Rubin.. You are a remarkable Soldier, Hero, Jew and Man.. May you rest knowing that your story lives on today and I will honor your life by telling your story to as many people as possible who comes through the doors of the US Army NCO Museum..
