The Mauthausen International Memorial And Liberation Ceremony 2019
Continuing with the central theme focus introduced by the Mauthausen Memorial in 2006, this year will see the Never A Number - Forever Human theme used as the various commemorative events take place at the former concentration camp near Linz.
Sunday, 5th May 2019 marks the 74th anniversary of the liberation of the camp.
Since February 1st, commemorative events have taken place at various locations related to the Mauthausen camp system. Today, being the actual anniversary, will be marked with the following acts of remembrance:
08:00 - Ceremonies at the national memorials From 8:00 to 11:00, memorial ceremonies will be held in the monument area of CC Memorial Mauthausen
09:45 Ecumenical service with Diocesan Bishop Dr. Manfred SCHEUER, Bishop Dr. Michael BÜNKER and Metropolitan Dr. Arsenios KARDAMAKIS; musical accompaniment: Musica Viva, choir of the parish Mauthausen, led by Alfred HOCHEDLINGER
10:00 International Youth Commemoration Ceremony
10:20 Assembly of a large Italian delegation and Austrian youth groups in orderly formation at the former roll call area
11:00 Collective liberation celebration at former roll call area. The joint memorial ceremony begins with the reading of the Mauthausen Oath in various languages. Welcoming address: Willi MERNYI, Chair of the Austrian Mauthausen Committee Presented by: Konstanze BREITEBNER, Mercedes ECHERER Musical accompaniment by the "Widerstand" ensemble and the "Militärmusik OÖ" Memorial speeches: During the memorial procession, representatives of national victim organizations from Belarus, Luxembourg, Slovenia and Austria will address the crowds in their national languages
12:45 Joint departure parade – similar to the first liberation ceremonies of CC survivors - with all participants at the end of the festivities. Official end of the Liberation Commemoration
Jewish groups, Austrian Roma and Sinti representatives will also hold commemorative events at the Mauthausen memorial today

Weather permitting, the Stairs of Death will reopen from 09:00 - 14:00 as part of the Liberation Ceremonies. The staors have been closed due to safety concerns since April last year
Tens of thousands were liberated in early May 1945, when US 3rd Army units arrived at the Mauthausen-Gusen camps. Of a total of around 190,000 people imprisoned in the Mauthausen concentration camp system, at least 90,000 died
