What are your opinions on this 1st class merit cross with swords? I believe it to be an original piece however a second opinion would be greatly appreciated.

nothing wrong with that.
Nice one.
It does have an uncommon type of catch, however. Most of these awards had a "C" catch hook soldered to the badge, whereas this one has a round base plate beneath it. Interesting.
