    one question what where these medals awarded for?
    I've seen many in the antique stores but not with their packet

    It was a awarded to recognize outstanding service by civilians in connection with the war effort.

    It is my understanding that the Kriegsverdienstmedaille was created as an alternative to the Kriegsverdienstkreuz, because the latter had lost some of its 'credibility' as a result of being over-awarded. The medal as opposed to the cross was awarded for any meritorious activity in contribution to the war effort, such as factory work. The others may correct me if I'm wrong about any of this, as I can't remember where I read it.

    Certainly they were only for civilians such as factory workers and the like, but what about the reason for their institution? Is it true that they were instituted to remedy the loss of prestige suffered by the KVK ohne Schwerter?
