You should follow Ade's advice and join a unit first.
Most groups have authenticity standards and they will tell you what and where to get your kit. Most groups have loaner gear and they can supply your gear for your first time out. It is advisable to try the hobby out first to see if it is for you.
Avoid purchasing things that you might think are correct only to find out it's not and you need to replace it. This will save you time and money...oh and save your money as the hobby is not cheap.
Hope this helps...
