1956 Artillery Officer Skimütze
Thought I'd just post this beauty here as well: an all original and near-mint (though worn) "M43"-style Skimütze for Artillery officers. Worn like this, with piping and "bullseye"-cockade, from 1956 (this one is dated III/1956) up to 1961. After that, they were officially replaced - but many were worn on long after '61, yet with the cockade replaced by the national weapon.

Jan, terrific piece, and a great-looking piece of headgear.
It is too bad the NVA didn't continue to wear Waffenfarbe on their headgear at least through end of the 1960s (they should have kept the tri-color cockade over the Staatswappen, too!)
I agree: these pieces look so much better (cockade as well, like you say) than their later replacements. Especially compared to the Russian-style winter hats they introduced in 1963!
