    Default DDR Motorcycle/Paratrooper helmet

I recently came across a Polish-made WZ63 helmet being sold rather cheap in Germany, and yesterday it finally arrived. As many DDR collectors will already know, this style of helmet was widely used by NVA motorcyclists, specialist units, and from the 1980's onwards by NVA paratroopers. The helmet shows signs of significant use, and the liner drawstring looks like parachute cord. There are no dates or manufacturers stamps on the helmet shell or liner, all that is stamped is the helmet size, but on the back of the helmet is stencilled in white letters... 3 Ksz If anyone could offer any help on this it would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers,
    Steve.

Steve i can't help you with the 3 Ksz marking, but the liner is usually ink stamped on the inside of the liner tongues, it has the date and maker. The shell maker stamp should be dead centre in the dome!...

    Hi Gunny,
As previously mentioned... there are no date stamps on the dome, and the only information on the liner is the helmet size of 57. There is simply nothing anywhere on it!

    Cheers,
    Steve.

Hi Steve ,Great looking been there example ,My thoughts are perhaps it was initially used as an airborne helmet ,i know that after a jump they were usually discarded ,whether they were re used i have no idea but i notice yours is lacking the para chinstrap comfort section so would say it saw use in the later part of its life at least and as you initially stated as a Motorcyclist helmet
Again this is only a gut feeling but 3 KSZ could well be a polish unit marking of some sort and would hazard a guess at military police level ,like i say this is just speculation on my part and i could be way off the mark
You have got one very nice looking helmet there and if you don't mind i would like to share my Polish Wz 63 ,please ignore the other warsaw pact airborne helmet as it is the only referance pictures i can find of the wz 63 to hand DDR Motorcycle/Paratrooper helmetDDR Motorcycle/Paratrooper helmet

    Hi James,
Nice helmets you have, and a good comparison to my example. As far as I am aware the chin cups were deliberately discarded by troops because they found it uncomfy to wear. The helmets were initially used by NVA motorcyclists and specialist troops from the 1960's onwards - before finally being adopted for use by Luftsturmregiment 40 in the early 1980's. Prior to this the regiment used a plastic-type of helmet. I'm not being a smart-arse, I didn't know anything about these helmets until last week when I did some digging around for information!

    Cheers,
    Steve.

No trouble Steve ,any info shared is all good in my book ,I am familiar with the plastic type you mention and if memory serves had a pop stud peak attachment which was in most cases removed and had a typical DDR economic design and manufacture ( cheap and nasty ) It might be worth posting a duplicate thread on the polish sub forum just to clear up the unit marking once and for all if all other avenues of research are exhausted

    I'll try that now.
