Re: East German Helmet ID
looks like
I I
09
70
II = size two [medium shell size]
09 = manufactured in September
70 = year of maufacture 1970
you have an non riveted smooth shell the last model , a nice Vietnam War era helmet , these were also used by the North Vietnamese anti aircraft gunners
does the liner have any ink stamps like NVA and a letter ? this is a code and you can also tell what year the liner was made, if the helmet has a matching year liner it should be stamped with a letter M that stands for 1970 year of manufacture
1968: K
- 1969 : Z
- 1970 : M
- 1971 : X
- 1972 : B
- 1973 : L
- 1974 : O
- 1975 : S
- 1976 : R
- 1977 : A
- 1978 : U
- 1979 : F
- 1980 : E
- 1981 : G
- 1982 : I
- 1983 : C
- 1984 : H
- 1985 : T
- 1986 : P
- 1987 : L
- 1988 : Y
- 1989 : N
- 1990 : D

Re: East German Helmet ID
Battle gear this Helmet liner is marked on the liner on the reverse side of one of the tonuges NVA m/1 So does this mean it is an North Vietnamese Helmet or are thoes just letter codes to ID the helmet.

the NVA marking is not for North Vietnamese, The acronym means NVA Nationale Volksarmee [National People's Army] followed by the number of the quarter and year code.
those are codes to identify the date of manufacture, sounds like you have a matching year of manufacture since it is marked with the letter M that is a 1970 liner
the 1 is probably the first quarter of the year like January - March 1970
helmets supplied to the Vietnamese would be the same ones used by the East Germans, no special markings

the early shells with rivets were manufactured from 1956 - 1966 but after 1966 they would have relined them with the new style adjustable liners up unitil reunification in 1990
