As there is a 1944 date on these, they were likely made for a specific event.

Hi Steve thanks for looking . Hi Bob as for the date I don't know I've seen lots of them on the web with the 1944 date I've also seen a silver 1944 dated patch that is very similar to this one. Gary
Not a specific event as such:
These NSRL badges were only allowed to be worn for one year after attaining them; contestants actually had to requalify for them on a yearly basis. This is why the year appears on them.
After qualifying for the fourth time, the badge could be worn permanently, now in a version without the year.
