Not to long ago there was a topic relative to period III Reich leather coats - although the one I show is not political it is a military leather overcoat for a general officer and relects the shoulderboard attachments and dagger slit.

I was wondering...is there any acceptable leather treatment that can be done to prevent crazing and drying of coats like this? Saddle soap, etc.? It's such a shame to watch leather age over the years and not be able to prevent it.

I had the same question in the past. There are a few threads in the restoration forum and members said that there are products out there which can make the leather supple again but in longterm they cause more damage which is irreversible.

I know I tried my Damnedest to save my old leather jacket, but once the leather starts to dry, no such luck. I tried Redwing Oil, Neatsfoot, Silicone, Kiwi rub in grease....nothing worked. After 40-50 years, leather just starts to Go. Look at the WWI spiked helmets-they shrink and crack into dust.

On all my leather items, including liners, I use Sheraton leather balsam,it helps to keep leather hydrated and protects the fibres with natural oils

A very nice overcoat indeed Horst it fits in well and compliments your collection
As to the question of preserving old leather I have had really good luck with a product called..Coach Lean.. it works very well on dried out leather and horse tack... ie bridals, saddles, stirrups, saddle bags, and chaps.
