    Top is the DLV ( Deutscher Luftsportverband) flag - the bottom is hard to tell as picture is in black and white but its probably the Black/White/Red flag which represents Germany.

    I agree with Horst. The bottom flag is most likely an imperial german tricolour and the top is a DLV flag.

    He's using a pole mounted anemometer to measure the wind speed, the flags are showing the winds direction. Both are essential information when one takes to the hills to go a-gliding......
