Need help assessing authenticity

How does one go about assessing the authenticity of tinnies? There is little helpful literature.One finds few recognized originals to measure against.Are there any guidelines?Are there "red flags",e.g., to be leary of "coffin-shaped"pin holders?Greatly appreciate any assistance,Steve M
