Always present at the forward observation post, he boldly and quickly assessed the situation and had his batteries bring down a powerful artillery barrage on the most important sectors. On February 18th and 19th, 1945, during the capture of the towns of Packhausen, Lichtwalde, and Hohendorf, he took the place of a battery commander who had been put out of action. He promptly took a number of measures and repelled several enemy counterattacks, inflicting as many as 10 casualties upon the enemy and suppressing 1 enemy battery.
