Short description of personal combat feat or accomplishment

E.P. Artemov has been on the frontlines since 1941 and in the 311 Rifle Division since September 1943. During this time he has proven himself a brave and resourceful officer. In fighting near D. Don (Leningrad Oblast), the division commander assigned Lieutenant Artemov the mission to occupy an observation post in a tall tree and report the course of the operation to the division commander, as well as correct artillery fire. The observation post’s location was heavily shelled by enemy artillery, including those firing on direct lay. Shells continuously slammed near the tree and shredded branches from the tree, but despite the imminent threat to Artemov’s life he did not abandon his post and in the course of an entire day he continued to observe and report all he had seen to the division commander.

In fighting for Ershovo on 14 April 1944 he likewise displayed bravery and valor. Having received the mission from the division commander to report the situation on the immediate front lines and disregarding heavy enemy sniper fire and frequent artillery explosions, he accompanied the attacking unit, directly participated in repelling a German counterattack with two tanks, took the necessary information, and reported the course of the fighting to the division commander.

During the most recent fighting 7-17 April 1944 he repeatedly checked the combat situation while under heavy enemy rifle, machinegun, and artillery fire. Artemov was always in the area of the greatest danger, but with his energetic actions this resourceful officer corrected the situation, evaluated the unfolding situation, and always reported it correctly and honestly.

Lieutenant Artemov is deserving of the Order of the Red Star.
Signed Commander, 311 Rifle Divsiion, Colonel Vladimorov on 21 April 1944
