Underneath the citation you can see that the regimental, division, and army commanders considered him worthy of a Red Banner, but at front level they decided to give him a Red Star instead.

The regiment commanded by Comrade Yakovlev displayed high levels of combat qualities, organization, and offensive spirit in offensive fighting from 31.8 through 13.9.43. More than 300 enemy soldiers and officers were killed, 250 enemy soldiers and officers were dispersed and partially destroyed, in addition three cannons, sixteen heavy machineguns, eight loaded cards, two observation posts were destroyed, eight artillery batteries were suppressed, one tank destroyed and nine tanks dispersed.

As was pointed out to me, and as evident in the research, he went from Lieutenant to Major, from Battery Commander to Battalion Commander to Regimental Commander in a period of about 18 months, indicative of casualty rates.
Another great star Bill, I especially like its worn and abused look it really makes you think what the recipient must have gone through whilst wearing it.
Thank you, Robin, but I think we do not "own" these awards, we merely "lease" them for a time. The relationship is merely custodial, certainly not permanent. As an esteemed collector colleague told me, "ultimately the awards only belong to those awarded them. We are finite and fleeting, the awards are eternal. . ."
As I have said before, one can never have too many Red Stars.
