The 1914/1918 Ehrenkreuz

Article about: by danhashman There are those little crossed swords on the ribbon. Is there something to tell about that? I often see Ehrenkreuze whose ribbons have no little swords attached to it, i guess

Back again with another little update showing some new acquisitions. These are all variations on a theme, displaying the combination of the 1914 EK2 with the Frontkämpfer cross.

First three ribbon bars, all in different sizes and styles. Top, a ribbon bar made of 30 mm ribbons sporting metal miniature crosses, with a reverse side that has a rather "rough" appearance: Note the lack of cloth backing, the crude stitching and the ordinary safety pin soldered to the backplate. Center, a ribbon bar also made of ca. 30 mm ribbons draped in a "Bavarian" fold with regulation metal devices, i.e. only the swords for the Frontkämpfer cross. Bottom, a much smaller ribbon bar with 15 mm ribbons; more precisely, this is actually a single 30 mm strip of ribbon representing the ribbons of both decorations. (It was not unusual for ribbons of common medal combinations to be manufactured as one-piece strips.)

And here's a full size court-mounted medal mith the crosses suspended from hooks allowing them to be removed and the bar to be worn as large-sized "classical" ribbon bar. Note the metal tag bearing the name of the firm that did the mounting: Bleckmann of Celle.

Andreas, can you tell me that the G & S maker marked Hindenburg crosses were produced by Godet & Sohn?

Another little update with three new pieces.

First, the ribbon bar for a veteran of two World Wars, with the ribbons for a 1939 EK2, a KVK2 and the Frontkämpfer Cross:

    Another nice court-mounted Kriegsteilnehmer cross:

Normally, I don't collect photographs, but sometimes I make an exception. Here is an old married couple wearing their decorations - The Mutterkreuz and the 1914/18 Frontkämpfer cross:

I really like the photo Andreas. You don't seem to find many images with the medal being worn like this, coupled with the Mutterkreuz as well makes it very interesting. Thank you for posting it.

    Nice additions mate.
Excellent photo. It's touching that they both wear their awards and still holding hands at that age
