The first one is the Ostmedaille or Russian Front Medal, Nuno. That's the zinc one, not quite as nice. They both appear to be good WWII era medals to me. Good looking enamel on the Mutter's Kruz.

The correct German names for these awards are:

    Ehrenkreuz der Deutschen Mutter
= Honour Cross of the German Mother. So called Mothers Cross

    Winterschlacht Im Osten
= so called Ostmedaille or The Eastern Front Medal.

    Cheers, Ade.

Thanks Ade, I know I need to use the formal names. I use slang terms far too often.

Hi Jay, it is all a learning curve

Slang names and horrible abbreviations are a pet hate of mine. These have really only come about since the advent of the internet. 30 years ago items were only called by their names translated into English. I think the only exception to the slang name terminology which does have a positive use is to those applied to a particular pattern of fake. This perhaps makes people more aware of certain pattern and makes them easier to remember.

I am keen to try and raise the general standard of terminology used and to try and get people to use the original German names where ever possible. Obviously, a new collector will not know these, but as time goes on and they become more educated I am sure they will start to pick them up. We have a useful pinned thread at the top of this forum with the names in English and German. I realise we are an International forum and English is a 2nd language to many here.

    Cheers, Ade.
