    Sam, sometimes they were engraved by the recipient, however more common they were engraved post war by dealers to get a better price, sadly

    Checked the DKiG Winner list and no Udo Panter is recorded !

    I'd agree with Nick about the engraving Sam. In much the same way as some dealers will add a name to the liner to bump up the price of a helmet, often we see awards defaced by some form of crude implement. It would be quite easy to dirty it up a bit inside the grooves too, in an attempt to match the wear with other slightly damaged parts of the piece, i.e. surface scratches. For the life of me though, I could never do that to an award as nice as this one.
