The first 1500 were given to Putsch vets.

The laquer was applied after the medal was oxidized to give it the gray look.

Interesting. I thought they were just struck in silver and that was pretty much it.

Thanks to all for your feedback! I am interested to learn, if possible, who the recipient was. My uncle spent time in various towns and cities, including Munich and Heidelberg.

Although the medal has an attached ribbon, if my uncle brought it back in a case, that seems to have disappeared. But despite living in a box with some other medals (mostly Long Service SS), it still looks pretty good to my untrained eyes.

    Best regards.

Post the other medals please. Not often do these appear with direct vet bring back provenance.

    Adrian,

The medals were 90% silver and oxidized to give them the smoky gray look.

Thanks, Horst! According to a posting on the Axis History Forum, Josef Lidl was a Kompanie Chef, which I think translates to Company Commander rather than Company Cook, right?

A few search attempts online haven't yielded anything further. I was a bit curious to know if he survived the war and might have been living in one of the cities my uncle visited.

    Best regards,

    Pat
