Good to see you made the most of the sunshine and took some great pics!

As already said, a very nice original cross in very nice condition too.

My theory on why some awards have shorter ribbons than others is that they get cut up over time. For example, a collector picks up a Mutterkreuz with a long ribbon. He then gets the chance to pick a couple more up at a cheap price because they don't have a ribbon. He gets home, he has a cross with a long ribbon so cuts it up and now all three crosses have ribbons!

The might happen at dealers too, they buy some Mutterkreuz with no ribbons but know they have others in stock with long ribbons. They will sell more crosses with ribbons and can get a better price too, so out come the scissors!

many thanks adrian for the nice comments ,and also your valid explanation on the short ribbon on my example ,it makes perfect sense ,can i ask as im not clued up on these ,in its original state how long would the ribbon of been ,im guessing enough to go around a wearers neck and a bit more kind regards james

Here's a photo to give you an idea. Obviously the wearer could shorten the ribbon to her desired length.

Adrains explanation makes perfect sense. As he says they may also have been shortened by the wearer to suit their own requirements, they may have worn a full size cross as a broach perhaps just a theory remember. I don’t know how one of my cross’s was worn as it has a stitch hole every centimetre along its length and is 27” long.
My longest ribbon is 29” long.
Pity they get cut I wouldn’t dream of it.
Adrians collection of these is impressive, as are a few others collections.

The full lenght of a ribbon should be 70cm total. Thats the size is must have to be a full lenght ribbon

I have owned maybe 10 or 15 mutter kreuzes over the years and only one came with a full 70 cm ribbon, all the others had very short ribbons.
I have since sold all my MC´s but I saved the long ribbon because it is rarer than the crosses
