I'm not a fan of the head of the eagle, or the wreath details, or the wool either. I'd be happy to be wrong however.

Not much my field, but I'm not liking this one. Even under magnification, I'm not seeing the city of Sebastopol on the bottom at the end of the river, and has been said, the eagle has a tack hammer head. The coast line under the wreath is unusual looking also. But, having said that, maybe it's a variant. There was more than one maker of these and quite a number of variations amongst them. Something like a quarter of a million of these shields were made...

Hi Panther and thank you for your thoughts on the shield.

To an untrained eye (such as mine), what pointers are there that makes this one an original variant as opposed to a fake? Can it be identified to a maker?

Hi Adrian....not a known maker. This type's come up before for discussion. A hard to find shield in sheet metal. Even harder to find in Zinc. The stamping looks a bit flat compared to the Wursters and Orth shields.

Here's an example I had in my collection.

    All the best....Peter
