does not having the backing detract much from its value or collectibility?

    Hi Joe,

It's a 1st type Deumer shield in zinc, they were also produced in steel. The round wire pronged types are an early production type, but these were also to be found at the end of the war on the "salesman's sample board" souvenirs that were popular with allied troops and as such may never have had any cloth backing unlike the earlier awarded shields.

The missing backing is not the main problem, it's the fact that there's little bronzed finish left and one of the prongs is missing that makes this a rather "ordinary" example.

    Regards, Ned.
