A late friend of mine used to make these distinctions between items; I'm inclined now to think the latter about this one! I hadn't added to my collection in quite a while, and probably shouldn'tve selected this particular item, since I don't know much about campaign shields and have been burned once before on a bad Kubanschild. Fortunately, that time I was able to trade it back to the seller for a decent silver wound badge.

I liked the overall wear and condition on this, but after looking at others online several things jump out as "wrong" to me: it's not magnetic, but appears to be stamped brass rather than tombac or zinc; there are no separately attached prongs, only those two folded-over tabs and the possibility of two more nearer the eagle's wings; and the "corosion" on the back looks suspicious, like it could be artificial aging.

Any thoughts on this would be most welcome!

You are right, James. It is chemically aged fake.

A poor quality and chemically age piece. IMO who knows? backing would help.

Looks like the top mounting tabs have broken off!..

It's a strange one to me! Looks like an Orth type 'B' with the side tabs, but all Orth badges were magnetic. The remaining tabs look a little different in shape, they should have rounded tips I think. Obverse is pretty good looking, but the fact it's non magnetic means it must be a duffer unless it's by a maker i'm not aware of. I'll be interested what others think about this one!

I'm not dismissing this out of hand, it does look to have a chance!....
