    Hi Erik,

To be honest, original shields are very rare and don't conform to a certain standard so even if a real one appeared, I doubt many here would be willing to bet their house on it.

The one you posted looks like a cast and based upon that alone I would say this is a fake.

I would be interested to see what others think as well though.

This is a goofy award in that it was made out of a variety of materials. There is nothing to compare it to, really. I would never buy one unless it came with rock solid provenance.

I don't know if it's correct, but i read the "real" shields have 3 or 4 holes near the edge of the shield, so it could be stitched to the uniform.

I'm with Mo on this , very difficult to authenticate any of these shields in my opinion without some relevant history with it !

Lumpy and crudely cast with no visible means for attachment to the uniform. I would definitely be thinking this one is doubtful. So-called originals are so absurdly rare as to make some collectors and researchers even question if they ever actually did exist or not. If they Did, it could only have been a handful of home-made prototypes and who knows what all they truly looked like.

Hi Erik, it is a fake.

Originals were all field made in POW camps: several original styles have now been identified and this is not one of them.

For once crudity can actually be in favour of originality.

    Cheers, Ade.

    A 57'er version was made...much easier to I.D. than late WW2 made shields !

I was wondering what you thought of this one . The back side has a black almost tar type substance on it . And the tread passed the burn test .
