No, thats not right. The same medals was awarded to both men and women.
The aluminium is probably just early made and later on they started making them from warmetals.

Why does this have 1938 on it? Would they need air defence wardens a year before the war started? It was really light, I thought it was a joke medal for a few seconds!

SwePeter is correct. 2nd Class medals were originally made from Aluminium and later zinc, but never as different weight medals for men and women, as far as I can ascertain.
The date has something to do with Hitler being in power for 5 yrs and the medal commemorated this fact.

1938 is the year the award was instituted. Civil Defense was made a national issue rather early, but other nations were doing much the same thing, as the bomber's potential became apparent...Thanks for the correction, I knew it came in two versions...
