    Hi,

    I have been browsing through the list of makers and was wondering about what a.d.N. and a.N. stands for? Especially the Gablonz makers have this after their location name.

    Thanks

    a.d.N means an der Neisse, so will be a.N.
    Neisse is a river. These days it is known as Jablonec nad Nisou ;
    Jablonec means appeltree as far as I know!

    a.d.N also can mean an der Nahe, but that is elsewhere in Germany:
    Rheinland Pfalz
    "Wir sollen auch unser Leben fr die Brder lassen" (1.Joh.3.16):
    zum Gedchtnis Wilhelm Schenk. Er starb frs Vaterland am 13. Juni 1916

    If several German towns/cities with the same name exist, their name is often used in conjuction with an additional geographical reference, often to a river. A well-known example is Frankfurt am Main vs. Frankfurt an der Oder. (In other cases, it's simply part of a town's/city's name.) Such suffixes are often abbreviated.

    As Wim Saris said, "Gablonz a.d.N." stands for "Gablonz an der Neisse".

    As for "a.N."; depending on context, this can also mean "am Neckar"; the Neckar being another river. Example: "Esslingen a.N." = "Esslingen am Neckar".

    In order to tell which is the correct interpretation of such an abbreviation, it its necessary to provide the name of the respective city/town preceding it, as they can sometimes have different meanings.
