I am looking at the one I have and it is really hard to tell if it is real or not because of the damage. IMO there is not enough proof to say it is faked, however let one of the pros come in here and lend you their advice I hope its real!
Even though the example shown above is not in the best condition to judge, in my opinion it is a replica. The width of the attachment ring seems very broad, and certainly wider than I have seen on original images.

Carl
I have tried to compare to original Memels but it is proving difficult due to the relic condtion. I tend to think this could be a 'mask' fake however

Too much loss of detail to be genuine in my opinion. I doubt fire or being buried would blur the detail as much as this example shows.
You may be aware that there is a huge amount of controversy regarding the Memels as far as judging fake v genuine. A search on the WAF will yield many threads where debate rages and common consensus seems to lean towards the slant 'G' and small 'A' versions as being trustworthy. Personally I feel such a view is small minded and tends to ignore the other manufacturers of this award.
FWIW, heres my L/18 Memel for comparison. The L/18 has a different wreath design to the more common Memels i've seen.
Heres mine...
Hey Kolby72 thats actually a sudetenland medal, 1 Oktober 1938,
Thanks, Glen.
Glen thanks for pointing that out! I thought they were the same medal. What is the difference? (besides having different images on the back)
Hey thats fine, there were three additions of this occupation medal, the first was the entry into austria i believe, then entry into the Sudetenland and then finally entry into Memel, Occupation Medals
Thanks, Glen.
