Default Quick questions about Schnellboot Kriegsabzeichen

    Hi guys,

Through your collecting experience, what pattern of these badges would you say are harder to find, the first or second type?

I am going to go take a look at one on Friday, so I have spent the past couple of hours researching them. If I remember correctly, he said it was a second type, and a Schwerin in zinc. From what I have researched, all second pattern badges were made in zinc. Is this true?

Also, are there any particular odd variants that I should be on the lookout for?

    Thanks,
    Mo

    Hello Mo,

The 1st pattern S-Boot badge is by far and away the rarer of the two S-Boot badges. The 2nd pattern badge was constructed only in zinc...if you see one made from any material other than zinc put it down!

Schwerin had issues much like most of the other manufactures with their finish on these badges. If you see a minty looking 2nd pattern Schwerin S-Boot be sure you know how to spot original finishes...as chances are it has been refinished. Usually the badges made by the firm 'AS in a triangle' are the ones found with a great deal of their finish intact.

Know your Schwerin hardware and how to detect casting evidence. It also doesn't hurt to use a digital scale and weigh the badge...that is usually an easy way to see if the material is what it should be or not. If you have looked at enough of them you should be able to spot a good one pretty quickly.

    Hope any of this helped.

    Hey Mo,
I completely agree with what Chrys has said, my badge has been posted here a couple of times but for your quick reference I'll add it again, take a look at the makers mark and note how uneven it is, a makers mark that is all completely straight and uniform letters should be viewed as fake. Note also the swastika, they can be found with solid and cut out spaces between the arms.
Good luck with it and I hope it's a good one.

Here is my 'AS in a Triangle' 2nd pattern S-Boot badge. This won't do you a bit of good comparing it to the Schwerin...but what the heck!
