I think it's a fake.
The metal is too brass-like with no 'stippling' in the background,
the small ring on the medal should have a bevel, the runes
on the ribbon are too large and poorly done.
A search of the Forum will show you what a genuine one
looks like........

Steve.
I have to agree with Steve. It doesn't look like an original example from the pics and again, try a search because several original medals have been posted here.
Looking for LDO marked EK2s and items relating to U-406.....
I think it's a fake too. The suspension ring should be tear drop shaped also from these photo's the colouration of the medal is all wrong with lack of detail and I have never come across a 8 year medal with SS runes on the ribbon.
Jay.
Also the suspension ring doesnt look bevelled

Thanks he probably threw it in with the rest of his original stuff and forgot about it thanks again and its for sale ill consider all offers lol - Nick k
Each serviceman in WWII was entitled to his medals. If he lost any, etc. he could write to the government and get a duplicate member. Sometimes the Government even engraved their name on the back - (ie. Medal of Honor). Many obtained these as duplicates so they would look 'newer' than the original.
A fake NO doubt.
