Would it be possible to post a photo of the reverse with the pin lifted to show the maker mark? Not sure if it is KW for Karl Wurster or not.
    Thanks,
    Ralph.

I believe that it is a GWL, Ralph, but the hardware is not looking good for it's authenticity.

A definate fake of a GWL badge IMO,although better pictures might be of more help here.

Basemetal looks odd and the GWL U-Boat badge had cast in fittings, both the hinge and the catch.Hard to tell from the images provided if the catch is of the cast in type?

    Regards,Martin.

I'll post pictures of the maker's mark and hinge soon, however condemning it as fake junk without backing your statement up isn't very helpful. Especially, since the pictures were deemed not good enough to make a final decision yet and a local militaria dealer said that it is genuine.

The maker's mark is GWL, but GWL's extremely high quality U-Boat badges-which are fully the equal or better of the famed Schwerin badges- are radically different from the piece shown. The pin is like none used by them, nor is the catch. The 3rd arm of the swastika on this one is filled in, and GWL's swastika's are cut out-like Schwerin's. The edges are rough edged-as can more easily be seen from the reverse-particularly around the eagle's body and head. GWL's have been heavily reproduced and some of them are getting fairly Good at it. So, sorry, no one likes to to be the bearer of bad news, but despite what the dealer you spoke of said, this badge, when comparing directly to a genuine GWL, is glaringly not good.
