    About the date problem:
Gren.Rgt.517 was not FORMED on 15.10.42 - Inf.Rgt.517 was officialy redesignated that day.
The whole series of Inf.Rgt. from 510-561 changed designation THAT day...

I think (my opinion...) this is just the "for the book" date for this series of regiments.

    Good work

Ersatztruppenteil for Gren Rgt 517 was indeed Grenadier-Ersatz-Bataillon 487 in Quedlingburg.

So it's possible that your man then went on to fight in Stalingrad, however the dates still are a bit out, as has been pointed out when the document was signed Gren Rgt 517 was still designated as Infanterie Regt 517 so the stamp should have been for Inf Regt 517 or Grenadier-Ersatz-Bataillon 487 ??

I would not take that to seriously. The whole easter front was in reorganization that summer. Regiments were taken out of the line for some time reform into the new Grenadier style. This venture started with disbanding a lots of units on 5.5. and ended with forming a lot of new ones on 15.10.
But this did not happen at once, reorganization of units takes its time. Units need more or less time to fill up to the new TO&E.
What is often forgotten is that this date, as most german OOB dates are taken out of the Fieldpostorder.
15.10. is just the date when GR517 was given a FPN (what is nicely shown on the document by the missing FPN in the sealstamp). It does not reflect on when it was formed or became operational again.

Indeed Possibly a good example of this as the unit was using the stamp of Gren Rgt 517 much earlier than it's " official " formation date.
