Document & Medal for the Restoration of the Black Metal Enterprises of the South

As discussed on The Soviet Military Awards Page, the Medal for the Restoration of the Black Metallurgical Enterprises was, "Established 18 May 1948. Also known as the medal for 'Reconstruction of Ferrous Metallurgical Enterprises in the South'. Awarded to workers, technicians, and engineers for outstanding performance of duties; high production; and meritorious service in reconstructing the ferrous metallurgy plants in the Southern USSR. During the Great Patriotic War, the Southern Regions of the USSR - the heart of the USSR's ferrous metallurgy - were occupied by German troops and most heavy industry plants were completely destroyed. Rebuilt were 13 blast furnaces; 49 open-hearth furnaces; 29 finishing mills; and 68 coke-oven batteries. . ." Approximately 69,000 were issued.

This example was issued to Ekaterina Artemovna Zhmurko on July 12th, 1949 by the Zaporizhya (Ukraine) City Council, Serial #088576.

An Issued Medal for having worked to rebuild a Foundry...now That's unusual! Did they give the poor slobs any Money as well, I wonder, or did they simply get a handsome Medal for their sweat and troubles?

As I understand the history of these medals, they were issued to engineering and management personnel who supervised German POW's who performed much of the "restoration".
