Pierre, I recall reading in "Red Army Uniforms 1918 - 1945" (Shalito, Savchenkov, Roginsky, & Tsyplenkov, Moscow, 2006) the Guards Badge was instituted on May 21, 1942 for members of the various Red Guard units.

First time it was established for all units of famous "katyusha" . And then for units which showed high courage and bravery in fighting with germans.

Were Guards units generally considered "elite" units? Did they get better weapons or training? Information in English is very hard to find on this subject.

Hi Strelok, yes they were considered elite units and tended to get the latest and best equipment etc. They also got higher pay.

    Cheers, Ade.

I would not go as far as to state that...

Even NKVD troops could not be compared with SS.
